ChatGPT’s daily users below 10%, says study
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which rapidly gained 100 million users within two months of its launch, has encountered challenges in maintaining consistent daily usage despite securing $14 billion in funding from venture capitalists, including a significant partnership with Microsoft. Although the company’s valuation has surged to $80 billion, making it the third most valuable unicorn globally, ChatGPT’s daily user base remains below 10 percent. Interestingly, last year, ChatGPT was the most visited Wikipedia article, surpassing even high-profile figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and blockbuster movies like ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie.’ However, this popularity hasn’t translated into sustained usage, as highlighted by a recent study
Findings from a YouGov survey conducted for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism between March and April 2024 across six countries revealed that only 10 percent of respondents use ChatGPT daily. Among the youngest demographic (aged 18–24), the daily usage rate is even lower at 9 percent, with 18 percent using it weekly and 12 percent monthly. Surprisingly, 44 percent of respondents in this age group have never used ChatGPT. The report highlights a significant discrepancy between public interest and actual usage. Despite OpenAI’s substantial funding and high valuation, the company faces the critical challenge of enhancing ChatGPT’s utility and appeal to a broader audience.
